An online guidance to help shippers and transport companies to assess the emissions of their transport and logistics activities was launched today by the Dutch innovation platform Duurzame Logistiek (sustainable logistics) (10 June 2010)

The guidelines and best practices developed by Altimedes Consulting together with the Dutch research institute CE Delft and the Dutch Shipper’s Council EVO, will help Dutch carriers and shippers to assess the emissions from their transport assets. The guidance helps companies to set goals, to understand the tradeoffs between choices and to optimize their modes of freight transport. Quantifying emissions from mobile sources and supply chains provides the baseline from which emission mitigation strategies can be developed and performance can be measured over time.

The development of these guidelines was funded by the Dutch Ministry of Transport (V&W) and assigned by the Innovation Platform Duurzame Logistiek to a consortium led by Altimedes Consulting.

Duurzame Logistiek is part of Connekt, a Dutch public-private organisation of 125 government bodies, industry (suppliers and users), administrators (telecom companies, private road administrators), users (transport companies, automobile associations, interest groups) and traffic experts, knowledge institutes and consultants.

Altimedes Consulting expands its consulting team with experts in alternative fuel and clean transport technologies and in energy management and performance improvement of industrial and logistics buildings (20 April 2010)

Altimedes Consulting, an independent European management consulting firm that focuses on sustainable logistics, transport and mobility expands its group of partners with Elske van de Fliert and Sofie Luyten.

Elske van de Fliert is an Industrial Engineer (Master of Science in Industrial Design Engineering TU Delft) and started her  career at DAF NV, the Dutch truck manufacturer, with a lifecycle assessment of exhaust gas after-treatment systems. She is an expert in alternative fuels, clean technologies and sustainable transport and mobility and assists (local) authorities and companies to develop and implement strategies to reduce their impact on fossil fuel use, air quality and other environmental issues.

Sofie Luyten is a bio engineer (KU Leuven), has a master in Environmental Management (University of Amsterdam) and is an leading expert in energy performance calculations and audits of buildings and project management.

Altimedes initiates pre-competitive cross-industry interest group on complexity in logistics and transport management (26 March 2010)

Transport and logistics systems are strongly connected and complex adaptive systems of many

individuals, firms, and authorities acting in parallel, constantly acting and reacting to what the other parties are doing. Coherent behaviour in the system arises from competition and cooperation among the different actors.

There are many areas and situations in transport and logistics where it is possible to understand the links between cause and effect and to produce prescriptive and predictive models as well as good management tools. On the other hand there is a growing awareness that many of our transport systems and logistics are becoming more and more coupled and complex systems and that a new approach is needed to cope with this complexity.

The concepts of complexity science have presented a way of better describing and understanding dynamics and processes of change found in a range of physical and biological phenomena. Understanding the concept of complexity in logistics and what complexity science can offer to logistics and transport research and management tools is relatively new.

Recent developments in this area are overarching concepts such as Distributed Adaptive Logistics (also called Sense and Respond Logistics originally developed as a concept by Stephan H. Haeckel at IBM’s Advanced Business Institute) and system of systems.

Distributed Adaptive Logistics is a system interwoven with network-centric operations and based upon highly adaptive, self-synchronizing, dynamically reconfigurable demand and support networks that anticipate and stimulate actions to enhance shared situational awareness capabilities and mitigate support shortfalls organized around self-synchronizing networks that sense demand signals early and produce adaptive responses automatically.

The system of systems approach is inspired by swarming and the behaviour in ant colonies. It moves away from the traditional model of a rigid chain of command to meet the challenges of complexity and uncertainty. Swarming requires autonomous or semi-autonomous operating agents, with strong synchronization and communications among them. A System of systems is able to perform functions that cannot be found in any component systems, and these functions are the main System of systems objectives. A characteristic of a system of systems is that it grows and evolves with time and experience.

The European Commission stated in its sustainable future for transport report that “a better

exploitation of the network’s capacity and of the relative strengths of each mode could contribute significantly to reducing congestion, emissions, pollution and accidents. This, however, requires the optimisation and operation of the network as a single entity, whereas currently modal networks are largely separated and even within modes there is a lack of integration between countries.”

ICT components and subsystems need a total system design that avoids the introduction of constraints that may hamper future objectives, developments and integration in a larger system.

Distributed Adaptive Logistics and System of Systems concepts can help to realise these objectives. Pre-competitive, multi-disciplinary and multi-sector collaboration are needed to develop these concepts and to develop common open standards. The creation of a European platform would be an important step to promote and facilitate this multi-disciplinary and multi-sector collaboration. It will create new business opportunities for logistics and transport management solution providers.

A meeting of the European industry interest group on complexity in logistics and transport management will be held in Brussels on Thursday 14th of October 2010 from 10:00 until

17:00.

Erik van Agtmaal, managing partner Altimedes Consulting, speaks at the Green Corridor summit organised by the EU Commission (9 December 2010)

Green Corridors are a European concept denoting long-distance freight transport corridors where advanced technology and co-modality are used to achieve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Launched in the Freight Transport Logistics Action Plan, Green Corridors support the EU's agenda towards decarbonising transport while emphasising the need for efficient logistics.

Erikvan Agtmaal will present during the IATA World Cargo Symposium in Bangkok a total supply chain analysis investigating opportunities for CO2 emissions mitigation in the air cargo supply chains based on the measurement of emissions along two typical freight supply chains involving airfreight of perishable goods. The study has been undertaken by a project team composed of IATA, Altimedes Consulting, Conlogic AB and LCP Consulting with support from the different supply chains participants, including producers, transport companies and retailers.

The study includes following outputs:

The World Cargo Symposion will bring together 200 air cargo supply chain decision makers and 800 cargo professionals from around the world.

Erik van Agtmaal presents sustainable transport study at the International Transport Forum, Leipzig 28th - 30th May 2008

The first International Transport Forum, held in Leipzig between the 28th and 30th May 2008, addressed the subject of 'Transport and Energy: the Challenge of Climate Change'. The event was attended by 900 delegates including around 35 transport ministers and over 50 national government delegations. Contributors included the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the chairman of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change, Rajendra Pachauri, and the Executive Secretary of the UN's Framework Convencion on Climate Change, Yvo de Boer.

One of the sessions on the 'Research, Industry and Stakeholders' day focused on 'Reducing CO
2 Emissions from Goods Transport'. Two research papers were commissioned for this session by Professor Alan McKinnon of Heriot-Watt University and by Erik van Agtmaal, Altimedes Consulting.
